Questions are being raised about the safety of a proposed shipping channel for oil and gas supertankers on British Columbia's central coast after a freighter struck rocks near Kitimat.

The Petersfield, a 41,000 deadweight ton bulk carrier loaded with soda ash and lumber products, sustained severe damage to its bow during the mishap in Douglas Channel last Friday night.

Enbridge's Pipedream: An overview

The Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline project proposes to build two parallel pipelines 1,170 kilometres from Alberta’s Tar Sands to B.C’s coast at Kitimat. If approved, the pipelines will travel through the salmon-bearing Upper Fraser and Skeena watersheds and will open our northern coastal waters to oil supertanker traffic.

Project poses no benefit to Northerners

The president of Enbridge’s Northern Gateway Pipeline project hopes to encourage “an open and thoughtful discussion” about the complex project and “move forward in a way that can benefit all northerners”.

Similar to a door-to-door salesman, Mr. Carruthers seems to think that if he keeps talking, he might score a sale.

But in what way could a pipeline transporting dirty tar sands oil across key wild salmon habitat to new supertanker traffic on our north coast “benefit all northerners”? It can’t.
