Cullen seeks commitment after Shea’s Rupert visit

PRINCE RUPERT – Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen wants to know what federal Fisheries Minister Gail Shea learned during her brief visit here on Monday, and what she will do to help avoid a repeat of the disastrous 2009 North Coast fishing season.

In an open letter to Gail Shea yesterday, Cullen said it is critical the minister assure coastal stakeholders she has heard and will act on their concerns.

Following is the text of Cullen’s letter to Shea, dated Dec. 16, 2009:

RE: Prince Rupert, British Columbia

Dear Honourable Minister,

Thank you for following through on your commitment to come to the North Coast to hear first-hand the impacts of government policies on the fishing community. I know I speak on behalf of the stakeholders in the region when I say I am glad to hear you recognize the need for you to return to the region soon.

With that in mind, please let me know both what you learned during your meetings in Prince Rupert, and what you have determined your office’s next steps to be. It is essential that your office to communicate to the stakeholders and region that you and your team are getting the critical messages and are putting plans in place to avoid repeating the disaster that was the 2009 season.

For the sake of the fishery and the people and communities that depend upon them for our very way of life, I look forward to working with you and your team to address the many serious issues of North Coast fisheries.

I look forward to your prompt reply.

Sincerely,
